Prioritizing Mental Health

The challenges of recent years have reminded us how important it is to take care of our mental well-being and support one another. The CDC continues to provide guidance for managing stress and coping during difficult times:

1. Care for Your Body

  • Eat nutritious, balanced meals.

  • Stay active with regular exercise.

  • Prioritize sleep and avoid substances like alcohol, tobacco, or recreational drugs.

2. Stay Connected

  • Share your feelings and concerns with trusted friends or family.

  • Nurture healthy relationships and build a supportive community.

3. Take Breaks and Practice Self-Care

  • Set aside time to relax and recharge.

  • Engage in activities that bring joy and calm.

  • Use deep breathing or mindfulness exercises to reduce stress.

4. Stay Informed Wisely

  • Follow reliable news sources for updates.

  • Be aware of misinformation or rumors online, especially on social media.

5. Limit News Overload

  • Avoid constant exposure to distressing news.

  • Take regular breaks, focus on enjoyable activities, and maintain daily routines.

6. Seek Help When Needed

  • If stress affects your daily life for several days or weeks, reach out to a clergy member, counselor, or doctor.

  • For immediate support, contact the SAMHSA helpline at 1-800-985-5990.

Common Signs of Emotional Distress

  • Intense emotions like fear, anger, sadness, worry, or frustration

  • Changes in appetite, energy, or activity levels

  • Difficulty concentrating or making decisions

  • Sleep problems or nightmares

  • Physical symptoms such as headaches, body aches, digestive issues, or skin problems

  • Worsening of chronic health conditions

  • Increased use of alcohol, tobacco, or other substances
